Sports Law

As a barrister I deal with two main areas of sports law on a Direct Access basis. Firstly representation before sporting disciplinary panels convened by sports governing body (“NGB”) decisions. This includes disciplinary proceedings for rule breaches both in and out of competition and breaches of athlete contracts. Secondly I deal with appeals against non-selection for major competitions and for elite funding.

I sit on the disciplinary panels for UK Athletics, British Cycling and British Canoeing. I have chaired disciplinary hearings for elite athletes who have committed serious breaches of their athlete contract with their NGB and for hearings imposing sanctions for breaking competition rules in elite competition. I understand how these proceedings work and provide robust representation for athletes who have disciplinary hearings. I can also advise before any appeal is lodged as to the best approach and prospects of success.

Prior to becoming a barrister I was a professional sports and fitness coach working with a number of elite athletes as well as a national league hockey player. As a sports lawyer I have not just the strong legal skills of a sports law barrister but a unique experience and understanding of the athlete’s perspective. I fully understand how serious it can be for your career if they miss selection for a major competition or are dropped from funding programmes. NGBs can make mistakes or not apply their selection criteria precisely. Given the potential consequences for elite athletes there are normally formal appeal processes, but they have tight time limits and any appeal must be brought quickly. I can advise on whether there are realistic grounds for appeal and quickly draft an appeal. I am adept at analysing criteria and highlighting mistakes that may lead to a decision being reversed.

I am happy to have a confidential chat to work out whether your problem is one I can help with. If I cannot help you, or Direct Access is not the correct medium for your issue I will point you in the right direction.
