Bar Standards Board help & advice for the public

The Bar Standards Board produces useful guides for members of the public thinking about using a Direct Access barrister. Click on any of the links below for further information:

How to pay for legal advice & representation

I cannot represent you as a Direct Access barrister through legal aid. If you wish to instruct me you will need to pay yourself or secure funding through other means. You may find that your household insurance or other insurance policy will pay for legal assistance. If you are a member of a trade union you may have legal cover through your membership. There are insurance policies you can take out for legal representation often called “Before the Event” or BTE insurance and “After the Event” or ATE insurance. Some solicitors may represent you on a “no win, no fee” basis. In each of these cases I may still be able to represent you as your barrister. Unfortunately I am unable to advise or recommend any particular supplier for those products mentioned above.
